Melbourne Graduate School of Education About Us

Message from the Dean

Welcome to the Melbourne Graduate School of Education (MGSE).

MGSE is an exciting place to be. We are at the forefront of innovation in education, working with partners in early childhood settings, schools, tertiary institutions, governments and beyond, constantly seeking new and improved ways to support Australia’s education system.

Our Master of Teaching is playing a significant role in reshaping teacher education. A major departure from traditional teacher education programs, its focus is on linking the theory taught in university with classroom experience, and on enabling graduates to tailor learning interventions to the needs of individual students.

The Master of Teaching is based on a clinical approach to teaching - explained in more detail here:

An independent review conducted in late 2010 showed that 90 per cent of Master of Teaching graduates feel either ‘well-prepared’ or ‘very well-prepared’ to start teaching, compared to 41 per cent of beginning teachers nationally*.

We are also proud of our excellent research record. Home to eight research centres and a number of internationally recognised experts, we hold a leading position in Australian education research. See the Melbourne Education Research Institute for more information.

For education professionals and professionals whose career has a significant education interface, we offer high quality, research-led professional development and further study. See our Masters programs or our coursework Doctor of Education for more detail.

Whether you come to the Melbourne Graduate School of Education to study, work or collaborate, we look forward to welcoming you warmly to a productive and collegial environment.
